Fact of the Miracle Photosynthesis
The leaves, the venue for photosynthesis in plants.
Photosynthesis is a biochemical process in which
plants, algae, and some bacteria to produce energy in use (nutrients) by
utilizing light energy. Almost all living things depend on energy produced in
photosynthesis. As a result of photosynthesis is essential for life on earth.
Photosynthesis also produces most meritorious oxygen contained in the earth's
atmosphere. Organisms which produce energy through photosynthesis (photos
meaning light) is referred to as fototrof. Photosynthesis is one of the ways in
photosynthetic carbon assimilation due to free carbon from CO2 bound (fixed) to
sugar as an energy storage molecule. Another way is the organism to assimilate
carbon through chemosynthesis, which is done by a number of sulfur bacteria.
Role of Chlorophyll :
Vegetation is autotrophs means able to
synthesize food directly of inorganic compounds. Vegetation use carbon dioxide and
water to produce sugar and oxygen necessary as food. The energy for this
process comes from photosynthesis. Consider the equation for the production of
glucose is:
6H2O + 6CO2 + light → C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 (Oxygen)
Glucose (Sugar):
Sugar of Glucose or fructose is sweet in taste. They are source of energy for living animal including human. These living creatures are consuming sugar every days or every times. This process takes place
through respiration that occurs in both animals and plants. Sugar is convert into energi in the respiration, sugar (glucose) and other compounds will react with oxygen to
produce carbon dioxide, water, and chemical energy.
Plants capture light using a pigment called
chlorophyll. Pigment is what gives the green color in plants.
In the leaves there is
a layer of cells called mesophyll chloroplasts containing half a million every
square millimeter. Light will pass through the epidermal layer without color
and transparent, to the mesophyll, where most of the photosynthesis process.
Leaf surface is usually covered by a waxy cuticle that is waterproof to prevent
the absorption of sunlight or excessive water evaporation.
Oxygen (O2)
Oxygen is essential to life, as the by product of photosynthesis, but more important than the main product. We can survive within weeks even within month without the input of glucose, but how long can we survive without oxygen ? An hour ?, No within minutes...
Very important for the life, and it is free of charge to get oxygen in this atmosphere, it is a miracle. And we still have to spend some money to consume glucose.
