Subsector of Plantation
of Agriculture
Agriculture in the broad sense includes the management of subsectors food crops, horticultural crops, industrial crops, fisheries, livestock, and there is an argument that includes also "forestry".
Among the subsector plantation sub-sector plays a strategic role in the Indonesian economy. Plantation sub-sector has a significant role in providing jobs, contributing around 17 million in 2003 This role is relatively consistent, both when Indonesia experienced a period of crisis and in times of boom. Plantation sub-sector is also very strategic in processed foods, such as palm oil and sugar, which is one of the pillars of economic and political stability in Indonesia. To national GDP without oil and gas, plantation sub-sector contribution is about 2.9% or about 2.6% of total GDP. If using GDP at 1993 constant prices, the share of the estate sub-sector of agriculture sector to GDP was 17.6%, while the non-oil GDP and national GDP respectively 3.0% and 2.8% (Central Bureau of Statistics 2004).

This implies that the Indonesian agricultural sector must be able to continuously improve their competitiveness. Second, changes in the strategic environment on environmental issues. Changes in the political factor and multi-dimensional crisis now faced by Indonesia is also a source of change in the strategic environment. Rampant justice issues are also other factors that contribute to change the strategic environment of the agricultural sector.
The development of technologies that have been developed and plantations that still need to be developed in the future. Therefore, after this introduction, a glance will discuss the development of the plantation sub-sector in general. Availability of technologies that have been developed by various research institutions, in particular, Indonesian Plantation Research Institute (LRPI), will be discussed in the next section. Furthermore, the discussion focused on technologies that still need to be developed. Paper concludes with some final notes.
Plantation subsector that experienced the most consistent growth, both in terms of acreage and production. Overall, the plantation area increased at a rate of 2.6% per year in the period 2000-2003, with a total area in 2003 reached 16.3 million ha. Of some important commodities in Indonesia (rubber, oil palm, coconut, coffee, cocoa, tea, and sugar cane), oil palm, rubber and cocoa growing more rapidly than other plantation crops with growth rates above 5% per year. The rapid growth of all three of these commodities are generally associated with a profit rate of utilization of these commodities relatively better and also government policy to encourage the expansion of the commodity.
Similarly, be certain strategic role for the increase in income and employment and the overall economy.

There should be restrictions on government for plantation development in Indonesia because it is causing negative large enough, if there is no restriction feared will further exacerbate the surrounding environment of the economy despite very favorable.
